Terminology

SAE (Sigma Alpha Epsilon): a social Greek-letter organization.

MI D-O (Michigan Delta-Omega): the Central Michigan University chapter of SAE

TG (True Gentleman): The creed of SAE, written by John Walter Wayland

Chapter: A unit of membership specific to a university.

Fraternity: A brotherhood.

Big Brother: A mentor, which a new member revieves during his new member period.

Little Brother: A mentee of the big brother.

Greek Life: Also known as Fraternity and Sorority Life, is the umbrella term for fraternities and sororities.

Active: An initiated member who has not become an alumnus yet.

Alumnus: An initated member, who has, or is preparing for graduation from the university.

Alumni: The plural of alumnus.

New Member Period: A period of time in which the fraternity and new member learn more about one another in a positive environment.

Initiation: The formal ritual of becomming a full member of the fraternity.

Hazing: Any action taken or situation created intentionally: that causes embarrassment, harassment or ridicule; risks emotional and/or physical harm; to members of an organization or team; whether new or not; regardless of the person's willingness to participate. Sigma Alpha Epsilon has zero tolerance for hazing.

Social: A setting in which people have the opportunity to meet one another in a safe environment.

NPC (National Panhellenic Council): the collective body of social sororities.

IFC (InterFraternity Council): the collective body of social fraternities.

Philanthropy: a charitable act

Ritual: a solemn ceremony consisting of a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order

Greek Week: a untity based week in which pairs of fraternities and sororities compete in a series of academic, athletic, philanthropic and other events.

Brother: a member of a fraternity.
